Digital magazines – reach a large audience at the click of a button

An increasing number of people and businesses are turning to digital technology to spread their respective news and messages.

Digital magazines were previously seen as the largely exclusive domain of major corporations and publishing organisations, with companies providing such services charging vastly inflated prices for restrictive licence-based agreements.

Now, however, thanks to advances in technology and Toro Vista’s ethos of social responsibility, the previously closed (or at the very least, financially obstructive) gates of digital magazine publishing are now open.

Whether you are a business, club, charity, school or individual, we aim to make digital publishing and media services accessible to as many people as possible.

The benefits of digital magazines and brochures, with an authentic ’page flip’ appearance, are immediately evident: Unlike print publications, dynamic interactive elements, such as film, audio, photo galleries/slideshows and links to relevant web-based content, can be included in the pages.

Most of us have read a magazine and immediately wished to discover more about the particular subject of an article. Digital publishing means that further information is just one click away.

Of course, eMagazines are more environmentally friendly too (there’s no need to chop down half a forest to produce them), and then there are the financial savings in relation to distribution; rather than having to pay out large amounts on postage or stockist fees, digital publications can be hosted online and launched in a browser by clicking on a simple link (click here for an example).

Toro Vista has been able to produce effective, eye-catching publications on behalf of clients, as well as target large customer-specific and speculative potential audiences through email marketing campaigns and social media.

And, because we offer a bespoke, personable service, which is quoted on an individual basis, as opposed to adopting a “one size fits all” approach, we are able to open up a whole range of opportunities for those who previously considered digital publishing to be out of their financial reach.

Furthermore, all our publications are cross-platform, which means that, as well as working on computers, laptops and Macs, they are also compatible with iPad, Android and mobile devices in link-enabled ‘page flip’ format too.

If you think you or your organisation could benefit from a digital magazine or brochure, please feel free to click here and view some examples, and then get in touch for a free, no obligation quote.

In addition to full design and editing options, we also offer a PDF conversion service for existing publications.

Book of the Month – Moving account of the football star and the illness that claimed his life

Our Book of the Month is the moving story of former German international goalkeeper Robert Enke and his battle with crippling depression – an illness that eventually led to him taking his own life.

Award-winning writer Ronald Reng examines his friend’s life, devastating illness and the pressures associated with being a professional sportsman at a top club.

Enke’s tragedy is a story of a man struggling against his demons and highlights the fact that depression does not respect background, social standing, affluence or fame – it is a mental health condition that should be treated with the same importance as other debilitating conditions.
A Life Too Short: The tragedy of Robert Enke‘ gives a valuable insight into an illness that is, sadly, so often stigmatised and misunderstood.
RIP Robert Enke.

Bluer skies but the grass isn’t greener

Fed up with the drab British weather?

So was Joe Cawley and his partner before they turned their backs on life working at a Lancashire fish market to run a bar on the sunny Spanish island of Tenerife.

Amidst a host of eccentric locals, homesickness and the occasional cockroach infestation, the pint-pulling novices struggled with ‘Brits abroad’ culture and discovered that, although the skies might be bluer, the grass is definitely not always greener.

‘More Ketchup than Salsa’ (Kindle version) provides a comical insight into the wild and wacky characters of an expat community in a familiar holiday destination.

The featured title in our ‘Distant Horizons’ promotion of travel literature, it is a must-read for anybody who has ever dreamed about jetting off to sunnier climes, finding a job abroad… or anybody who has even momentarily flirted with the idea of ‘doing a Shirley Valentine’ in these trying economic times.

Just £1.99 (and immediately delivered to your Kindle device/app) if purchased through Toro Vista Bookshop.

Author’s protection from the godfathers he exposed

Roberto Saviano needs round-the-clock protection.

From the time his brilliant account of the Neapolitan Mafia was first published, the writer/journalist has had death threats, been forced to relocate and has been assigned a permanent police escort by the Italian Minister of the Interior.

Saviano, who grew up in Naples, decided to investigate the Camorra after seeing the devastating effect organised crime was having on local communities.

The concrete jungles of the Scampia and Secondigliano sections of the city, which provide a grim backdrop to much of the violence, murder and drug-related crime in which the Camorra is immersed (its clans also control public services such as waste disposal and landfill operations), were actually used as a location during filming for a widely acclaimed movie adaptation of the book.

However, despite being thrust into the public spotlight, the area remains under the grip of the crime families, with many of those featuring in Saviano’s book literally still calling the shots.

In Gomorrah, Saviano takes the reader on a journey deep into the heart of Naples’ seedy underbelly and exposes the activities of the godfathers and their lieutenants, as well shedding light on how their influence has spread into virtually every facet of Neapolitan life.

Gomorrah was first published in 2006 and has deservedly won numerous literary prizes. Saviano’s courageous stance even prompted respected philosopher/author Umberto Eco to brand him a “national hero”.

Certain politicians, including disgraced former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, have been critical of Gomorrah, as they claim the book and film portrays the country in a bad light.

However, Saviano’s account is both well-researched and written from first-hand experience, and he has also received support from no less than six Nobel Prize-awarded authors and intellectuals, who published an article siding with the writer against the Camorra and calling on the Government to both protect him and address the issue.

Given the ongoing issues with serious and organised crime in Naples, Gomorrah remains a dramatic, gripping and hugely relevant account.

For that very reason, Toro Vista Bookshop is pleased to include it among the recommended titles in our current crime literature promotion.

Gomorrah is an essential read for anyone with an interest in true crime.
